I've had quite a few vintages of this wine and it's usually among my favourites. However this time it was a disappointment. None of the usual herb notes were there and instead it leaned heavily towards lavender and violet. I don't know if this is the vintage or my bottle being in a weird phase.

14% alcohol. G 50%, S 50%. Good long cork with no wine penetration. Served at cellar temperature as this was a replacement for a corked bottle. The note is based on the last glass. Deep colour with marginal thinning at the edge on the rim. The nose is as good as ever with a lively combination of liquorice, garrigue and violet. Very fresh, with nothing remotely cooked or stewed. The mouth is in the same vein, nimble and refined with excellent grip; the alcohol does not call attention to itself. This estate is in a class of its own for its ability to produce elegant muscular wines in the deep south. So much better than the awful Lirac Mordorée that I had yesterday! A repeat purchase in principle, but I have quite a stock of Montirius to go through, and I have no supplier at the moment.

Corked, entered just for the record. The taint was unmistakable on the nose, so no need to check in the mouth (I have learnt to be grateful for small mercies).

On point. Well, at least I think that's the phrase. Clearly French Rhone with a good whack of Grenache. Medium bodied, earthy, herby and delicious. Like a glass of fine fruit with a rural backbone warmed under the hot sun. Will probably lose body from here but continue to deliver excellent and delicious flavours. Buy again.
