A great effort from a tough vintage, and really drinking well at this stage. Bright cherry notes and some spice, hints of mocha and tobacco. Smooth and structured, with great balance and acidity. If you had the patience to age this wine, you will be rewarded.

Get-Together with Friends (Santa Rosa): Served as a horizontal trio of 2011 Hawkes Cabernets, to include the Red Winery, Stone Vineyard, and Pyramid Vineyard. This was my favorite of the three, with a decent push of red berry fruit. Still somewhat muted and austere on the attack and thin mid-palate, but it held interest on the initial delivery of flavors. 87-88 points.

This is an excellent California Cab. The wine has great clarity with a deep garnet color. The mineral aroma includes notes of floral and graphite. The wine has great legs indicating a fair amount of alcohol, but there is little alcoholic bitterness. The wine is very complex with layers of plum, chocolate and licorice. I find it best enjoyed with a glass of ice water to clear the palate as the finish is long and enjoyable. One glass should last about an hour. The wine is drinkable now, but will probably mellow with time.

A big wine. Licorice. A good effort for a Sonoma cab in a tough year.
