Calera founder Josh Jensen passed away earlier this month after a lifetime of achievements that included elevating American Pinot Noir on the world stage
Day 1 Served this with the Vinlog System 👃Bold, sexy, purple fruit floods from the glass endlessly 👅Spicy purple fruit, blood orange, sasafras, and licorice. A gentle tannic pull on the smoke tinged finish. Drinking well
Remaining wine was Slow Decanted in my refrigerator
DAY 10 👃Sweet, spicy, purple fruits with more vanilla, oak, vegetal, and tobacco notes than Day 1 👅Same sweet plummy fruit with tobacco and licorice. Fruit forward but balanced. Soft tannins and no heat
I did not have a preference for Day 1 or Day 10. There were more oak notes on both the nose and palate on Day 10. Two solid showings 👍This is solidly in its drinking window & will remain there for quite some time🍷

Red berry and cola aromas with some earthy notes. Very complex and aromatic. Signature Calera flavor profile — flavors of plums, cherry, cranberry, mint, and herbs with a slightly dusty/chalky finish. Perfectly integrated with lively acidity and fine tannins. Very tasty juice.
In a really good place right now, but a few years of life remaining. Drink or hold.

Looking back at my notes from 8+ years ago, I owe an apology and thanks for an education. This was the last of the 4 bottles and the first that really spoke to me. I think I saw promise in 2013, but over the next 3 or 4 years. the next 2 bottles did not really improve and seemed disappointing. I think the bottle just shut down. This time, the expressive nose of cola and spice and forest floor was excellent and the body, although not fruit forward, had enough red fruit to balance the acid and tannins with a good finish. Interesting how the bottle evolved; and certainly lived up to the Burgundian description from 2013.

Disappointment when compared to prior bottles. Had some type of fizzy taste in the beginning. Never really developed the bold fruit I remembered from prior bottles.
