A few with friends (02 Huet, 08 Pride, Sattler Zweigelt) (Tom and Betty's): I was looking for something to take to the neighbors that would go with the food they were making (a vegetarian version of chicken with artichokes using seitan). I gave this a shot and I thought it worked pretty well. Low in alcohol 12.5%. Ruby/purple in color. The nose has cherries and rhubarb in it although not Pinot like. More deep and dark but still red fruit. Medium bodied. There is a nice complexity here. it works with the food, not elevating it, but staying in the background. Artichokes are a difficult food pairing, but this worked enough not to clash or get tinny. Finishing the bottle after dinner, this put on a bit of weight, but I will say, I appreciated the lower alcohol.

PnP, almost black in the glass. The nose is mellow chocolate, rhubarb and cherry. The palate is fairly simple with a continued theme from the nose. This has some tartness to it and no tannins with a lighter mouthfeel and a short finish. A pleasant food wine, worth a try.

Some value wines from Austria; 8/9/2014-8/10/2014 (WRW): Not as good as the St. Laurent, this is still nice. At $22 Ohio, it less of a value but reasonable. Cherries, rhubarb and strawberries on the nose. It does have a green/bell pepper streak. The palate is better than the nose, however, it does come off as a bit generic red wine. I will confess to having less than 20 Zweigelts in my life so perhaps that's unfair. It is a very solid wine that is drinking well right now.

Pleasant. A good table red that resembles Merlot. Dark fruit including cherries. Soft finish.
