Originally bought this wine as a novelty from Macedonia, and opened for a tasting of 14 Zinfandels mainly to see how this 7 year old wine has aged and how much it seemed like a Zinfandel. Genetically, this wine has zero Zinfandel, though one grape varietal is a parent of Zin, and the other grape varietal has Zin as a parent. Pitch black to the edge with a half inch pour, with aromas of blackberry and mulberry. The sip starts with a hit of acidity, a jab of sweetness, an undertow of tannin, fruit flavors of blackberry and raspberry, and a soft texture. The swallow adds an edge of drying tannin. Overall, the wine is a decent ringer for a Sonoma Zinfandel, though not a great one like a rich, lush, and complex Teldelshi or Monte Rosso. Seems to be aging fairly well, but without any great improvement over the younger wine.

Garnet/ purple color with minimal clearing at rim. Medium aromas of blackberry/ boysenberry with "sour" aspect. Full on palate of black fruit with medium(+) tannins and medium(+) acidity. Reminds me of Zinfandel but more acidity. This was a good showing.

Massive fruit on opening with firm but accessible tannin grip, an hour in decanter soften it all. Mixed red and black fruits backed up by solid coffee action. Enjoyed over a long dinner, well made but not impressive, too new world for my taste at the end, strangely enough I liked it more before the decanting took place. A tough competition at this price range.

Interesting Macedonian red made from Vranec and Plavec grapes. Big blue and black fruits on the nose with a touch of smoke. Cooked black cherry, prune, a touch of tar, medium acidity, somewhat coarse tannins and a medium finish. This is fairly simple, lacking a mid palate and a bit rough on the edges.

poorly structured with grapey flavor and brambly earthy tones
