Briefly decanted due to a cork pulling mishap at the restaurant. Inky ruby, just a touch of bricking on the rim. Very interesting nose - fruit subdued, strong secondary and tertiary aromas. Heaps of mushroom, earth, bacon fat - just a hint of toasty pizza crust. More muscular than expected for a volnay, but still elegant - and very much alive in the glass, despite my fears about the age. The smallest suggestion of something bitter at the very end which keeps it from being truly outstanding, but fine drinking nonetheless!

Lutefisk and BYO: Dark, some brown in the brim; slightly bretty, smoke, dark fruit; intense and dark-fruited, long, full bodied, very structured, tannins still present. Although angular still, it gives much pleasure with food now.

Oh what a little beautiful overperformer this was.
Initial notes of extremely hot summer ripened cherries and some strawberry. This has THICK WET rose petals all over it but still not to heated as the structure seemed almost cold climate-like. It must be due to the incredible vintage of '99 that has kept this wine so much in check. Only the last drops revealed a starting ageing edge. This was a crowd pleaser (consisting of highly Burg snobs).
Drink now or hold for another 5 years

So dark in the glass -- is this really a '99? Pretty big and muscular -- this is macho Volnay. Concentrated. Just marked by brett -- just enough to be distracting unless manure/barnyard is your thing. Multiple bretty bottles to date which is clearly not dissipating with time (nor with decanting).

Second of two bottles. First bottle a week back was bretty but drinkable, no denying that the underlying material was there. Tonight, there is dark red spiced fruit on the nose. On the palate, soft dark berry, kir, ore, a hint of reduction, requisite mineral. Long and seamless. Youthful, viscous, relatively concentrated, balanced, and lovely. Speaks of its terroir. Decanted and consumed over about three hours. A winner.
