  • (SYP) Blind tasting. Small glass
Flower petal, leaves, red fruits, spices and longans on the nose, cool and mature on the palate with chewy tannins .I thought it was a '95 but had to go with 2004 after being told it is a post-2000 vintage. 90

  • Phenomenal from first pour. Classic Burgundy balance and finesse. Must be near peak right now. Fruit and mineral and herbs and a touch of funk. Good acidity. Stayed good for hours.

    At La Toque.

  • 2004 Hudelot Noellat Romanee St Vivant Grand Cru
2004 Hudelot Noellat Richebourg Grand Cru

I’ve been waiting to drink these side by side and a NYE with good friends after an extraordinary year seemed the right time. I opened with confidence as I’ve heard good things about both wines from this vintage. On open both showed beautifully. I didn’t pick up green notes like i have with so many other 2004s.

Over the course of the evening, I kept on being drawn to the Richebourg. Richer, rounder more enticing. The RSV was more austere, more reserved. Both were very Pinot. Ethereal, regal, refined. Red fruits.

Similar experience on the palate. It’s really splitting hairs, but the Richebourg was just a bit more open, more inviting. Both showed amazing depth and complexity. Red fruits, superb balance.

  • This wine's appreciation will depend on you sensitivity to green notes. Some found this stunning, I picked up green pepper that slightly detracted from an outstanding raspberry, dark cherry and spiced palate.
