  • Good wine, quite well composed.

  • Aged for 15 months in American oak barrels, of which 15% were 1st fill, 30% were 2nd or 3rd fill and 55% were older.

Very dark, slightly translucent black cherry color. Rich, powerful and somewhat meaty nose with brooding aromas of smoke, ripe blackberry-driven dark fruit, some savory old wood and a subtle hint of minty character. The wine is rich, full-bodied and dark-toned on the palate with very pronounced oak spice, juicy blackberry-driven dark fruit, some savory woody bitterness, a little bit of charred meat and a hint of sweet black cherry. The wine is mdoerately high in acidity with pretty firm medium tannins, making the structure pretty nicely balanced with the body. The finish is long, juicy and quite powerful with long flavors of smoky meaty character, jammy dark berries, some peppery spice and woody bitterness, a hint of ripe plummy fruit and a touch of mouthdrying tannic astringency.

This is a decent and balanced Aussie Shiraz, being pretty balanced and harmonious for a Brown Brothers red - usually the wines by Brown Bros. seem to be heavily acid-adjusted, making the wines feel oddly racy yet really ripe and almost jammy, making them feel pretty weird and unbalanced. This wine, however, is pretty harmonious, showing good but not exaggerated acidity and ripe yet not jammy fruit, all wrapped up in still somewhat noticeable, yet not overwhelming oak spice. This is not a particularly fine or memorable example of Shiraz from down under, but noticeably better than most of the BB wines. Feels a bit expensive at 14,99€, however.
