  • Rosso Reâl is a Tazzelenghe blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. 14,5% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Fully opaque and somewhat developed blackish-red color with a hint of developed maroon towards the rim. Intense, savory and somewhat tertiary nose with aromas of pruney fruit, some raisiny tones, a little bit of oxidative soy sauce, light peppery notes and a hint of balsamic VA. The wine is full-bodied, developed and meaty with rather tertiary flavors of prunes and raisins, some soy sauce, a little bit of ripe boysenberry and subtly sweet syrupy undertones, light notes of rusted iron, a hint of dried cherries and a touch of withered flowers. The overall feel is still quite structured with the moderately high acidity and still rather grippy tannins. The finish is quite tannic with long, tertiary flavors of peppery meat stew, some alcohol warmth, a little bit of sour cherry bitterness, light umami tones of gamey meat, a hint of prune and a touch of raisin.

A surprisingly developed and very tertiary wine for a 13-yo Friuli red. I remember somebody claiming this was a Schioppettino, but it didn't exhibit any typical Schioppettino characteristics, and the winery website says Rosso Reâl is a Tazzelenghe with some Cab and Merlot. At least the tannic structure would be stylistically more in line with Tazzelenghe than Schioppettino. Nevertheless, either this wine has been kept in rather poor conditions, or then it's just a wine that evolves much faster than one would think for a Friuli red. Still quite enjoyable and thoroughly drinkable, but not really showing its best anymore.
