  • Chris' Birthday dinner (Chris & Cae's): This was back on form and absolutely gorgeous. It had such a wonderful nose, with melting drops of blueberries and violets, along with drifts of earthy mineral and a little waft of spice - a really seductive bouquet. The palate was completely on point too. Supremely balance and wonderfully integrated, it unfolded in deep layers of a blueberries and black cherries, earth, mineral and sweet spice, all laced with a little drift of violets floating away into the finish on a bed of velvety tannins. A true Grand Cru in terms of depth and breadth, but also with a nice sense of elegance, and a lovely ring of 2002’s transperancy and purity throughout. This had a nice sweetness to it, yet without any of the clunkiness that some of Girardin’s wines from this era display. Absolutely lovely, and quite at peak now.

  • Fourteenth Annual White Truffle Dinner (Chez Weber - Chicago IL): Served single blind alongside the Amoureuses. Dense mostly red fruit with good weight and background spice. Nothing particularly indicated this was Chambolle for me, making it a very tasty, but somewhat indistinct Burgundy. I found the Amoureuses slightly more texturally complex, and made me prefer that wine.

  • Light pink, brick; animal, gamey, barnyard, black fruit nose; mid-big body; good tannins; nice structure; bigger style; a little hot; long semi-chewy finish; needs time.

  • Gina's Birthday Dinner (Kai Garden, Marina Square): A slightly more worked, extracted style of Burgundy than most of the other wines on show, but really nice as always - showing better, in fact, than the last bottle I had back in January of this year. The nose had a touch of toasty wood and brambly spice floating around a deep core of blue fruit and funky, meaty notes, with a steely band of iron mineral running along behind. A deep, masculine bouquet. This was nicely echoed on the palate, with a powerful mouthful of blue fruit and iron mineral couched in nicely fresh acidity and velvety tannins. A muscular wine, with lots of substance, but also very nicely balanced and structured, with a good bit of acidity and fine tannins still forming a noble frame for the wine. Nice long finish too, with a nice blush of spice and a lovely pull of steely mineral drifting away on the back-palate. Lovely stuff, drinking nicely now but with upside still to come over the next few years. My wine of the night along with the 1981 Haut Bailly that followed.

  • 2002 Burgundy 1er Cru Lunch (Fragrance Teochew Restaurant): Not as impressive as the last couple of bottles I had (this felt a touch simpler), but this was still a lovely drop. It was drinking a lot more readily than some of the 1er Crus on show - perhaps unsurprising given how precocious this was even a few years back. There was a very nice nose here, qutie classically Bonnes Mares, with lovely rich aromas of blueberries and violet florals infused with earth and soil and and a gentle spiciness, all still lightly fleched with a hint of oak. A rich, thick bouquet. The palate was drinking wonderfully well, opening with a real mouthful of spice and blueberries, earth and fruit peel - all this showing a lovely depth and clarity. It finished with plenty of juicy fruit alongside a nice lilt of earth and spice notes. A few years more in the bottle may add a bit of complexity to what were otherwise straightforward flavours, but boy was it delicious to drink on the day, what with all that easy-going balance and juicy clarity that marks the best of 2002 red Burgundies.
