  • Very drinkable but lacking expression

  • A blend of Pinot Noir (60%) and Chardonnay (40%) sourced from Aube, Grauves (Côte des Blancs) and Bisseuil (Montagne de Reims). About 75% is base wine and 25% is reserve wine. Aged for 24-30 months on the lees before disgorgement. 12,5% alcohol, 8-10 g/l dosage, 6,5 g/l acidity.

Yellow-green color. Enjoyably expressive and moderately toasty nose with aromas of ripe citrus fruits, some autolytic notes of brioche, a little bit of mealy apple, light leesy notes of yeast, a hint of oat biscuits and a faint - yet not unpleasant - touch of wet dog or something vaguely funky. The wine is dry, fresh and quite crisp on the palate with a medium body and flavors of leesy yeast, some mealy apple, light chalky mineral tones, a little bit of autolytic toast that tends towards bready baguette character, a mineral hint of wet rocks and a touch of salinity. Good, high acidity and a soft, gentle mousse. The finish is long, dry and tangy with flavors of lemony citrus fruits and tart green apple, some leesy notes of yeast, a little bit of stony minerality, light autolytic, bready nuances and a sweeter hint of ripe white fruit stemming from the dosage.

A nice, balanced and enjoyably nuanced effort for an inexpensive entry-level NV Champagne. This is not just about simple fresh fruit, but also some autolytic, slightly toasty depth of flavor as well. The dosage slightly shows as a subtle sweetness in the aftertaste, but otherwise this is enjoyably fresh, crisp and balanced effort. Drinking well right now, but will continue to age and improve for at least a handful of years more. Pretty good value at 34,99€.

  • Popped and poured from a 375ml bottle. Good nose of ripe apple, pear and a bit of toast. Medium bodied, dry, refreshing, showing nice flavors of ripe apple and a bit of toasty notes with firm acidity and good mousse. Actually very good.

  • Not bad for the price. Slightly syrupy and almost harsh but otherwise sound. Sweet stone fruit, salt, baking spice, crisp citrus and almond paste. For $20-30 it delivers.

  • A private lunch (Restaurant Salt, Stratford-upon-Avon, UK): A blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, from vineyards in the Aube and from Grauves in the Côte des Blancs and Bisseuil on the Montagne de Reims. Clearly Pinot Noir dominated, fruit forward, spice touches reminiscent of Pinot Meunier (even if it is not in the blend), slightly rough texture and some phenolic bitterness. Is there some taille in there?
