Notes on Con's wines served double blind (Wellington, NZ): Tasted double blind. Deep, dark ruby colour. Black cherry, blackberry, Vosne spice, bramble, earth and blackcurrant perfumes. Also dark fruited and seriously structured on palate. Earthy, herby with some iron ore at its core. Vibrant, racy acidity. Still some grippy tannin, but otherwise the elements nicely melded and evolved. I guessed Martinborough and, on the reveal, could see the Te Muna Road (slightly cooler, damper) terroir. The Kupe is the top single vineyard pinot in Escarpment's hierarchy but usually - most vintages - I prefer the older vines, Martinborough Terraces Kiwa. The excellent 2013 vintage is an exception and the 2013 Kupe is a top class Martinborough pinot noir. Ideally, drink after 2025. 93+.

Update: 2 days after opening, the youthful roughness has dissipated, but it remains too heavy to be really enjoyable. Dropping from 92 to 91.
Still very young in early 2022: quite tannic, deep dark black-purple with no visible signs of age.Flavors and aromas of young fruit still figuring out how to assimilate with whole and soften up. A high quality, intense, heavy pinot. Perhaps it's a good thing that the Kupe comes off as very pure. But it would be more fun if it had a little bit of earthy, funky notes. I suspect those may develop over the next several years. Drink from 2021 to 2028 or 2030.

Still aromatic, dark berries but lacking the 'farmyard' complexity of a similar age Burgundy I had recently. Silky tannins on the palate and still very enjoyable, despite the official 'drinking window' having passed.

I was excited to try this. I had cellared this lone bottle for several years and opened it tonight. Unfortunately, TCA ruined the day. Bummer.
