To be honest, I had never even heard of this property, located in Puisseguin-Saint-Emilion, one of the more obscure "satellite" villages of St. Emilion. Furthermore, it was from a rather poor vintage, and only the constraints of oppressive poverty could have moved me to purchase a wine upon which I would once have cast a somewhat jaundiced eye.
This is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The color is very dark, and the nose is fruity and enticing, with a strong, oaky undercurrent. Also lots of fruit and oak on the palate, with a bit of earthiness on the finish. The fruit flavors are simple, rustic, and undemanding, Good depth, but not much complexity. The tannins are a little rough. All in all, a much better wine than anticipated, and held up well to a meal of steak and wild rice. Ah, for the good old days when one could drink Bordeaux (however humble) at will. This wine is fairly priced at around $15. Not a keeper, probably at its peak.
