A nose of dark fruit and spices, dark purple in color. A medium to full bodied red blend, with black cherry, plum, licorice and spices on finish, good not great. www.winelx.com

Weekly tasting group #207; Spain: Rioja vs Ribera del Duero plus one great pirate! (@ RW): In the bouquet ripe blackberries, plums and vanilla. On the palate sweet ripe dark berries, herbs and spices, cocoa, licorice, vanilla and some earth. Beautiful acidity and round, slightly sticky tannin. Well dosed oak. Still youthful. No problem keeping this until 2020+. Most beautiful wine in this tasting so far. 88 - 89

This is one of those Reserva wines that means it. It has the kind of fruit structure that after seeing considerable time in oak and bottle is still vibrant and youthful. The color is not really all that dark. It is not rich and creamy, it just has big, juicy, fresh blueberry and blackberry fruit that may go on for decades. It is not showing those secondary flavors like licorice and tar, just really precise and tasty dark fruit. There is an interesting touch of gaminess and underbrush. Of course the oak treatment has helped mellow things.
