  • Ermes Pavese Private Dinner (New York, NY): From 375ml. You can't have a wine dinner without at least one bottle of red (right?), so I made this a last-minute addition to our line-up. I'm quite taken with this wine, although of course it isn't on the level of Bea's passito. Exceptionally tannic, but the sweetness from the wine and the fat from our cheese did a nice job of balancing it. Herby, raisiny, and mineral: pretty dark tasty, in my opinion. A nice way to end a meal, and at $25, a nice value, too. Rated 1 on a scale of -1 to 3.

  • Fongoli Visit (Az. Fongoli, Montefalco, Italy): From 375ml. The grapes for this were dried on straw mats for two months—less time than most producers set their Passito grapes aside, I believe. It doesn't seem to have hurt the wine: wild herbs, maple, and prunes create an intoxicating aroma, which is carried forward on the semi-sweet palate with great balance of acidity and tannin and an iron-inflected finish. Sagrantino Passito is a truly dynamic wine and this is a great rendition of it. Rated 1 on a scale of -1 to 3.
