  • One of the dangers of grabbing a bottle out of the rack at home without remembering what it is or where you got it is that it could actually turn out to be something expensive or more dramatic than expected for a Wednesday night. I guess that's a good description of what passes for mid-week excitement in my house! Such is definitely the case with this wine. I didn't even remember that St. Laurent was a grape variety, let alone of indigenous importance in Austria and allegedly though mistakenly linked to pinot noir. The color is much darker than anything pinot from France, borderline red/purple. The nose is pronounced, with deep red fruit, spice and smoke, and while I probably wouldn't have recognized it as a pinot if served blind in my wildest dreams, it does have a passing resemblance to certain big fat California pinots I've had. There is substantial weight to the wine, with a suave midpalate yielding to significant alcohol and a roasted fruit backlash that comes late in the finish, probably an artifact of the vintage. Interesting and different.
