  It appears that my rating of this wine continues to decline after each tasting. My first impression of this wine was a blockbuster in the making in 2006. While quite tannic it had underlying structure which I though would allow this wine to age for some time. When I revisited this wine in 2008 I reduced my rating of 95 to 91 due in part because the tannins still had a firm grip on the wine but felt that potential still existed if the tannins ever loosened. Last night my wife and I drank this wine with grilled asparagus, grilled bone-in ribeye and salad. While I was happy to see that then intense tannins have finally started to loosen I found that the hints of oak that I tasted in 2008 are now in the forefront almost to the point of dominating the aftertaste of the wine. On top of that the bite to this wine suggests a higher alcohol content than listed on the bottle which might have been disguised by the strong tannins of earlier tastings. All in all the 2002 Amici is a pleasant wine but not much more than that. I must bow my head in frustration as I thought I was onto something spectacular four years ago but find my self relegating this wine to a typical everyday bottle of drinking wine.

  Blackberry with cedar, earth, mint and maybe some mushroom. At first this seemed lightly tannic until my lips went numb. It is very tannic and also pretty acidic, especially considering California's reputation for wines lacking acidity. Nice fruit and cream finish. The wine is accessible and enjoyable now despite its fierce structure but I feel this would benefit from some more age. I would not mistake this for Bordeaux, it is California wine for sure, but very structured with lots of restraint and lots of flavor (contradictory but true).

  The wife and I agreed that this is nothing special. Predominantly earthy. Muted nose and muted fruit on the attack with no power or substance.
