  • Very well made combo of old world and napa. Sangio in blend is evident - with traditional style - which is rare in Cal. Only complaint is high alcohol. Good for 18.

  • Call Me Crazy

While I have called myself that many times, outright and even subconsciously, and I can’t fain that I’m not crazy like that famous TV character that kept proclaiming “My Mom had me tested,” at least I don’t think she did, in this case, fortunately, I’m not talking about myself. Although as I sit and write this post the 3 to 5 inches of snow that was forecast for the area did indeed happen and maybe I do need to question my sanity for living here.

Nevertheless, I am not talking about me this time (there’s a switch), this post revolves around a recent evening as I was making do with what I had in the house for dinner. I had planned to go grocery shopping on Friday morning but with the snow and having to arrange my departure from home at 8 A.M. I decided to forego shopping for one more day. That sounds pretty sane to me.

That left me with the issue of what did I have in the house that I could make for dinner. The good news is that I always have cans of diced tomatoes and various herbs and seasonings on hand. I also try to keep some form of pasta in the house as an alternative to rice and potatoes. Sounds like I’m heading into “I tal yen” territory! Please tell me that isn’t defamatory.

So I whip up some noodles and set about making my homemade pasta sauce when it strikes me that I need a wine to go along with dinner. Sounds like a nice Italian wine is just right. Browsing my wines I came across a Sangiovese Blend that looked interesting. Even more so when you consider that it comes from….wait for it….Napa Valley!

    Bacio Divino Pazzo 2013

Here’s where, if you know Italian, you’ll understand the title of this post. Pazzo in Italian means “Crazy.” From the Janzen Family and with the assistance from Kirk Venge as winemaker, the blend of 58% Sangiovese, 22% Merlot, 12% Syrah, and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon are brought together as one very interesting wine. First off, while Sangiovese dominates, the color of the wine tells you this isn’t an ordinary Sangiovese. Dark red in the glass tells you this will bring with it lots of flavors, which it most certainly does! Dark red berry fruit starts you off; it has a few years on it so it has softened nicely. Pretty big-bodied wine, thanks to the addition of the Syrah and Cab. Rolls on through to a clean and spice-filled finish. I was very pleased with the wine and the pairing.

So while there are many things that you could point at and question my sanity, in the case of this wine there’s no reason to “Call me Crazy!” It’s a goody!

    Cheers

  • Finished the last of these that I had. Great overall. I let it sit for just 20 minutes or so and it was good to go. Smooth integrated tannins, good fruit and good finish. Little sediment but not much.

  • Dark, mostly opaque purple color but has a freshness to it. Nose is somewhat closed but opens with 30 minutes of air. Small berries with some floral notes and tight tannins express Sangiovese within the blend. It’s a nice wine, very good for the price, and not overly “modernized”. I think you’d guess new world but it’s varietally distinct and made honestly. Still time left for tannic resolution if you’re holding and not too much new wood in play.

  • A fun, New World-style blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Black fruit, red fruit, herbs, savory spices and moderate oak spice. Medium acidity, medium tannins and high alcohol (14.9%) which, however, does not seem quite so high. Very approachable and refreshing, with good depth and flavor intensity. Drinking very well now, although it should last for several more years.
