My rule of thumb for Kirkland wines is that you can trust the big-shouldered varietals (syrah, maybe tempranillo) but softer more elegant grapes like merlot don't work out for them.

Powerful and jammy, with a cloying sweetness. Loads of dark berry fruit and a firm structure, but the 14.5% alcohol results in an overload of heat. Too thick, too syrupy, too much.
