Still pretty fresh for an 02 with only minimal bricking. Dark rich fruits on the mid palate behind a firmly retrained attack. The overall sense is one of multilayered complexity with impressive balance.

I normally have no problem with a big fat Barossa bomb once in a while, but this simply didn't cut it. All prunes and alcohol on the nose, and not much better on the palate, drank only cause I didnt have time for a substitute bottle.

(HARES CHASE Barossa Shiraz) Chase Dear Friends, I received a late-night email after the Super Bowl regarding this deal and (maybe they had been consuming too much Shiraz prior to agreeing to this) but hare goes (pun or wit?)... This pretty much speaks for itself - a few years ago I remember being offered this wine at a great price of $38 wholesale - now it is much less retail. The most ridiculous part is that the wine is nearing its peak drinking window and it's from one of the Barossa's coldest, most even-keeled and classic vintages in history (with fresh aromatics and balance as the hallmark - not to mention a very long life ahead for many of the wines). We live in an unpredictable wine-world right now and a price like this is testament to the "strange days indeed". Whatever it is, it's one of the best Shiraz deals in a long time on a tannic, powerful wine that has a number of years left in a cold cellar. From Peter Taylor (of Penfold's fame): This is an original parcel of the Hare's Chase - perfectly stored since release. EXTREMELY LIMITED at this price: 2002 Hare's Chase Shiraz Barossa Valley (this is not the "Barossa Blend" at $20-25; this is the flagship 100% Shiraz) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Aus6610

Classic style Barossa Shiraz, generously bold, never ending finish, with a fresh minty aftertaste
At 20 years old, this Shiraz is still much alive, fresh with bitter cigar taste and chilli hot spicy.
Cigar and Cloves dominate throughout, with mellowed plum, grass, vanilla and a bit of meat.
Tannins are well integrated, bright acid still, medium dry, with a baseline of minerals.
The wine is well balanced but I find the bitterness too overpowering. It does taste less bitter over the next few days….

Held up very well. Thankfully, not corked like the last bottle. Big, dark fruit & spice.
