  • What a complex little wine! Enjoyed a la carte tonight. Impression of the nose after pop was a barnyard-laden expression with a hint of dirty raspberry and a cigar note. Poured a violet color into the glass and allowed to sit 15-30 minutes. At that time, the entry of the wine was quite a bit acidic and a little darker with mostly earthy raspberry, figs, and pie spice, giving way to a darker tobacco and smoke elements in the middle (raspberry core). Finished with some rather stiff, punchy tannin and with good fruit expression. As this one opened up over the next 1-2 hours, the barnyard died on the nose, the entry showed more of a sweeter side of raspberry, even though it still retained its brambly and tobacco type characteristics, and the tannins softened. Even though this is a wine with 5% Carignane from Calistoga mixed with 95% Mourvedre from Pope Valley, I think the wine changed quite a bit when the 5% Carignane decided to show up to the party, which wasn't immediate! The Mourvedre seemed to expressed much earlier. Finished more like a zin after a few hours! Nice wine, and glad I have another! Drink 2016-2020.
