NOSE: very light aromatics; light botrytis; light marmalade; not much going on here.

BODY: medium amber color; full bodied.

TASTE: weird: it's sweet, but without much flavor; medium acidity; very light kumquat; there's both a green aspect and also a weird plastic-y note --- not offensive, really, but not good, either; 12.7% alc. is a little noticeable; overall, not much of anything really here. Day 13 did bring some glimmer of promise, with a new orange marmalade note that was not present on Day 1, but this isn't enough to wildly change my mind. Not sure what final conclusion to draw from this experience --- maybe hold for a very long time?

    Day 1 score: 50, 5, 10, 13, 5 = 83
Day 13 gut impression score: 85

EDIT: It has been brought to my attention that this bottle may have been slightly TCA-infected. That had not previously occurred to me, but now that I take that thought into consideration I believe that is the most likely explanation for the experience I had.

  • Nice bottle. Not too sweet which was good as it complemented lussekatter well. Great acidity.

  • This doesn’t smell or taste super botrytized for a late-harvest wine from 2013, but it has enough stink to keep it fun.

I was sitting here trying to pin down the specific smells and tastes in the glass, and was having some trouble. Then I recalled that this is Pinot Blanc. Makes sense: The grape always seems to produce wines that exhibit, in my relatively limited experience (mostly confined to Oregon), a certain neutrality to them.

This follows in that vein. It’s all about subtle peachy notes underpinning a sensual collision of luscious, round mouthfeel and steely, clean backbone. The sweetness, of course, adds lusciousness to what in a good Gris is already a voluptuously round texture. Yet somehow there’s plenty of acid to keep this tasting clean.

The finish keeps going, leaving your mouth sticky with a coating of sugar but your palate paradoxically cleansed by a refreshing acidity.

Really excellent stuff. And the presence of a dessert wine in the lineup really boosts my already high estimation of Goodfellow as a producer. Bravo.

  • This wine satisfied a group with diverse tastes. The acid keeps this so fresh and lively. Excellent with our cheese course. I could see this also pairing well with an olive oil cake or similar baked good.

  • Very enjoyable, lemonade with a fresh grape fruit juice finish. Sweet but not syrupy. Lively acid kept it refreshing.
