  • I normally stay away from big league white Burgundy but this wine hit a particular note for me this summer that glued itself to my psyche all the way to the present day. There is such tension and tenacity in this wine (mixed with a core of "come hither" demure fruit and stone) that the taster cannot help but allow their time and place to be transported to another level of vinous consciousness.

In addition, Chateau de la Maltroye's Chassagne-Montrachet "La Romanee" Blanc can still be had for a reasonable tariff versus the very top-end (i.e. Chevalier, etc) and, I can tell you, in a tasting next to the Ruchottes and other examples from Ramonet and Leflaive et al, this wine was the surprise of the show...

Burghound (6/15/2015): "There is almost no topsoil in this particular parcel and the vines grow into fragmented, heavily fissured rock. A much less reserved nose features mildly exotic fruit notes, including dried orchard fruit scents along with a hint of matchstick. The attractively rich and seductively textured middle weight plus flavors are delicious while exhibiting a subtle minerality on the citrusy finish that delivers both strikingly good depth and length. This too is built to age but should be approachable a bit sooner than the Grandes Ruchottes. 2020+. Sweet Spot! Outstanding! 93pts"
