Community Tasting Notes (6) Median Score: 92 points

  • Day after my 33rd bday, seemed fitting to open up this 2013.

    Purple with slightly ruby edges.
Nose is a bit sweeter than expected, lots of fruit, but backed up by graphite, leather, oak pellets, licorice, vanilla and cool mint. Really a nice blend.

Very velvety, light mouthfeel, but unlike the nose there is not a ton of fruit, though still plentiful. Tannins are very well integrated, when I think of Newton wine I think of strong tannin, but this is very well integrated. As the glass empties the edges become a bit more burnt. A bit of licorice sticks out along with the fruit, also some savory notes in the finish like black olive.

Not as much sediment as I have come to expect from Newton wine.

Altogether really good, still has many years ahead but good luck finding more bottles.

Solid 92.5 with room for improvement

  • Approximately 1 hour decant. Seemed to hot and out of balance. Enjoyable, but I was disappointed.

  • Dark purple with some pale ruby edges, big concentrated fruit bouquet, strong leather, cedar pencil shavings, sweet spring flowers, licorice, cigar smoke, savory black olive. A lot going on in the different aromas

A lot of structure in this, quite a bit to unpack and very dry. Blue and black berries, black olives, dark chocolate mocha and salty burnt caramel to balance, with a nice creamy mouthfeel that’s still on the light side & a really dry finish. Cigar smoke, dark fruit, a little vanilla.

Really good tannin still, an oak smoked licorice flavor with great dark fruit taste, dry velvety tannins. This wine could benefit from probably 3-5 years, but it is just starting to enter its prime, I really liked it when I first tried it a year ago but it has improved since then.
