This is one of the more usual and pleasant creations I’ve had in Napa.
Dark amber in color. Dried stone fruit; apricot, nectarine & peach. Marmalade, dry pineapple, caramel & butterscotch notes, Lipton tea with sugar, burnt top of creme brûlée, very nice round acidity and a delicious polished finish.
This makes for a great dessert wine or will drink nicely on its own. Worth picking up a bottle and trying at $35. I definitely did.
The Matthiasson Sweet Vermouth is made from a very uncommon varietal in Napa, Flora. It’s a varietal created in the 1950’s from a cross between Semillon and Gewurztraminer. Surprisingly, this varietal still grows in the Yount Mill Vineyard in Oakville.
They pick the fruit late increasing the sweetness during fermentation and adding cane sugar or in wine terminology, capitalize it. 17% ABV but, you never sense it as such.

Ended the evening with some glasses of the Flora Vermouth. Color is a deep amber. Served on an ice cube to chill down the wine. Pretty nose of honeysuckle, caramel and florals. Really delicious in the vein of a very lightly fortified desert wine (17% ABV) - apricots, baked peaches with honey, honeycomb, vanilla, white flowers. Silky texture. Subtly sweet with a touch a warmth on the finish.

Unsure where the “Flora” comes in, not mentioned on the label. This version is “No. 2.” 17% abv. Light brownish ruby color. Nose a little hot, some acetone flavor with a vinous aroma finish, plump golden raisins per J. Palate silky a bit velvety, caramel and orange rind, long finish, lingering flavors of vanilla and caramelized fruits. Great on its own, rec chilling, but would love to see this in a brown spirit cocktail. 91 pts

This is delicious stuff that lasted in my fridge for weeks. Hard to describe: a hint of tawny port, some bitter amaro notes, some sweet peachy notes, citrus rind. I could go on. A great wine to cap things off for those who don't want a ton of sweet.

Matthiasson tasting with Steve & Jill Matthiasson (Matthiasson Vineyards): Tasted at the vineyard with Steve & Jill. This is my first time tasting vermouth as a stand alone - so was not sure what to expect. It was delicious - drinks almost like a desert wine with a bit more of kick. It is quite viscous in the glass with a darker than amber color. Very smooth on the palate and tasting of ripe summer peaches and honey. I think it would be amazing poured over some vanilla ice cream. Really interesting and delicious and a great addition to anyone's bar.
