Similar to the 2016, this is a very pleasant surprise given it’s past its cellar tracker drinking window. Now focused more on tertiary notes - dried plum and cherry, leather, earth, game, it’s freshness carries through despite the 14.5% alcohol - finish a little hotter than I would like. Medium+ tannins. I see the latest vintage (2020) is £6.99 at Waitrose - that’s an absolute steal.

Deep, almost completely opaque black cherry with a hint of developed maroon hue. Somewhat restrained, but also quite juicy and nuanced nose with aromas of ripe red plums, some licorice, a little bit of juicy blackberries, light notes of smoke and peppery spice and a touch of savory wood. The wine is full-bodied, dense and quite meaty on the palate with nuanced flavors of peppery spice, gamey umami tones, some peppery spice, a little bit of cocoa oak, hints of wizened dark fruits and a hint of leather. The wine feels quite structured with its moderately high acidity and firm tannins that lend quite a bit of grip to the midpalate. The finish is quite grippy and pretty lengthy with pretty meaty flavors of ripe plums, roasted game, some earthiness, a little bit of peppery spice and a hint of sweet blackberry-driven forest fruit character.
A robust, balanced and remarkably serious effort that feels somewhat developed with its quite earthy and meaty tones. Perhaps a bit more evolved than it should be at this age, but if it is responsible for its less-fruity and more savory character, I don't mind. Overall a nicely muscular effort that is obviously more Shiraz than Syrah, but also markedly more "old world" in style. Great value at 12,99€.
