  • Delicate, pretty, and developing nose of potpourri, medicinal red cherries, and moss. Absolutely gorgeous balance of slightly dried red cherry fruit with savory notes of dried leaves and baking spices. The juicy acidity and dusty tannins provide a nice frame for the wine. In the perfect spot for my palate, and I'll likely open my remaining bottle in the next couple years, but definitely has the stuffing to go longer.

  • So over the past few recent vintages, Marcus has started to select special barrels for his Heritage releases -this is the 2nd release in that series. I'm not sure if this is a single vineyard release like later vintages of the Heritage series typically are.

Like the two previous wines, lightly-colored for a Pinot. When I opened this bottle I got a nice whiff of wine, and in the glass it's even more pronounced - ripe red fruit and menthol - very nice, and at least IMO, clearly the best nose of the three wines today.

This is still young, IMO, but pretty tasty today even if you know it will be better in another 3-5 years. Lighter-bodied on the palate, red fruits and good acidity, with a touch of acerbity on the finish that adds additional complexity to the overall package. At least on opening (pre-food), this is my favorite of the three Goodfellow Pinots.

  • PnP impressions: Light ruby. Very bright, pure red fruit nose; floral. Good weight; medium+, with a light mouthfeel overall. Quite vibrant. Really nicely-textured spice mixture (baking; oregano; white pepper) on the palate that leads into a blast of pure red cherry and tart red plum into the finish. Velvet fist / iron glove. Pleasing length.

This is all about elegance, and at the same time has the structure to keep on going.

Re-visting after a little air: Decided to decant after the bottle had been open for a couple hours and enjoyed another glass at about the 4 hour mark. Nose has fresh earth and takes on a more savory tone; some intoxicating sage coming out at the 5 hour mark. Wait 3-5 years on next bottle. Would love to see where it's at about age 15-20.

Day 2, nose has some ash, palate has some juicy red apple.

  • Poured in a Grassl Cru glass and followed for several hours over the afternoon/evening.

There is a perfumed nose of fresh bog cranberries, cherry, blood orange, cherry blossom, saddle leather, and sous bois. With another hour in the glass the savory notes on the nose start to recede and the fruit is nicely balanced by floral aromas of cherry blossom and potpourri.

Mouthwatering acidity coupled with silky smooth tannins provide a foundation for the wine on the palate, which is lightweight and savory. Saddle leather, wet Autumn leaves, Asian spices, and a touch of cranberry and tart cherry caress the tongue and palate, and linger for a long finish.

I suspect the higher acidity and slightly thin body are characteristic of the 2013 vintage in general. The wine is ready to go now but I think it'll last another 8-10 years at its current stage.
