Slightly reserved on the nose, on the palate the wine is balanced with a fine acid spine, light to medium bodied with a nice flow. The fruits are in the red spectrum, and manages to avoid the overripe fruit / dried herb finish that afflicts many Australian pinot noirs (a personal dislike, others may like). A reasonable effort. Unsure whether it would benefit from further cellaring. 13% ABV.

{screwcap, 13%} Mouldering old new world Pinot. Compost aromas and flavours, ageing soft oak, nothing especially distinctive on the palate but that generic Pinot character, soft dusty tannins, low/medium acidity, low/medium weight. A wine that hasn’t quite found its way yet. Age it longer sure, but it’ll just fade rather than improve.

{screwcap, 13%} Lovely, slightly fading garnet, in very pinot guise. Moderately intense nose of cherry, glue, pastrami. Spicy undergrowth too, but you’d never mistake it for old world. Quite light-bodied, easy palate, with low dusty tannins, medium acidity, soft ripe red berry fruit, very subtle oak. Tangibly sweet strawberry twist to the flavours, but it’s a subtle wine, with an even finish, not terribly intense, but persistent to medium length. Not mature, but not developed all that much either. Pleasant drinking now, I wouldn’t hesitate to give it another five years in the hope of something more than ‘decent villages’ appearing.

4 Tasmania Wineries Jan-16; 1/2/2016-1/5/2016 (Coal Valley, Tasmania): {screwcap, 13%, A$50} Cherry/plum, dark chocolate and earth. It’s medium-bodied, youthful, with low/medium chalky tannins, medium acid, spicy and savoury all at once. There’s a dry, medium length finish which is very satisfying in its integrity. Very good wine. Will see ten years easy.
