Open last night. Big bodied Merlot. Opaque ruby-magenta. Varietal nose. In the mouth, full-bodied, rich. Chewy, chunky, chocolate. Drinking well now, but no danger in keeping for many more years. 5-13-16-8: 92/100.

Popped and poured. Totally opaque, with red legs. Loads of plump red berry fruit in the nose. Full and rich in the mouth, with cocoa flavors predominating. Long, mouthcoating finish. 5-12-16-8: 91/100.

Consistently good. Rich, full, thick, unctuous wine. Huge color and extract, there's fabulous chocolate and mocha fruit here, it's like liquid chocolate-covered cherries. A boatload of tannins, but they are chewy and the sweet fruit is more than a match. Only quibble is a bit of heat on the Long but slightly ragged finish. 5-13-17-8: 93/100.

The previous reviewers all captured the deliciousness that this Merlot delivers. And, at a $30 price point, if you love a good Merlot, buy a couple of cases.

Taste TOP May Wines (San Diego Wine Co.): 100% Merlot from a rocky apron beneath Bennett Peak; 18 mos a mix of new and used FR oak barrels; 15.4% ABV, 5.7 g/L T.A., & 3.74 pH; 267 cs
N: Slightly closed, but SEEMS both "big" & potentially complex
P: Med body; Ripe, ALMOST swtish frt (approaching threshold R.S.?) with some astringent pucker latish mid-P, this pretty much extending into & through the LONG, astringent finish. Lacking the frt to overcome the finish once it has the requisite aging? [But, based upon other reviews, am I missing something?] 94 pts WA, 90 WE @ $35, & Silver @ '17 S.F. Chronicle Wine Comp. [Tasted @ $29.99, but in late June 2018 no longer seems available... anywhere.]
