Community Tasting Notes (1) Avg Score: 84 points

  • Twenty years ago when I was working in Sam's Wines & Spirits, a coworker told me that Kendall-Jackson Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay was goosed with chenin blanc and some other aromatic varietals just shy of the 25% threshold that would have prevented a varietal designation as chardonnay. Who knows if that was true, but I thought back on that story when I tried this wine, which, to its credit, does clearly declare it to be a chardonnay-viognier blend on the label. Fine wine with a sense of place and uniqueness this is not, but to be fair, it is cleanly made, has bright fruit flavors and aromas (mostly reminiscent of the viognier -- peaches, apricots, white flowers) with a generous mouthfeel, a reasonable amount of acidity, and no oak or malo as far as I could tell. For less than seven bucks, it did all one could ask of it. This is not a wine for us snobs, but for a big party or reception; for non-wino friends who like brightly flavorful wine; for service at 35,000 feet in a mostly-pressurized flying metal tube; and similar applications, it certainly does the trick.
