Light to medium ruby color, with a hint of brick at the rim. Quite an interesting nose, which has a notably meaty, smoky, savory quality to it. Definitely a bit of a bloody, iron-mineral character, as well as a spice-rub zest. From there, a ripe but reserved red fruit aroma emerges, like sour cherries from a distance. And finally, there's a floral aspect of potpourri—various dried flowers and maybe some pine cone. On the palate, it is of medium weight at most, and not particularly structured—just a light coating of slightly green tannin. But the expressiveness of the nose is carried through, with good complexity in the flavor profile of fruit, spice, earth, savory notes, and floral character. The fruit is lighter and has a bit less depth than I'd like. It's maybe a bit hollow when it comes to the fruit—is there maybe some carbonic maceration going on in this wine? The finish is good, though: herbal, spicy, smoky, and long. I don't have much experience with this variety, so I don't know how this stacks up with others, but, all things considered, it's quite a good wine that is just let down a little bit by a lack of stuffing on the mid-palate.

Aug 2016: Had with grilled salmon, bread, veggies. A bit soft for the grilled preparation, but tasty, seems like bringing it down in temp would be good.
Aug 2016: Tasting. Silky, tight (in a good way), light tannin, good for food. Salmon, veggies, cheese.

Dark blackberries that becomes red raspberries with chocolate. Medium tannins and finish. Some residual oakiness.
