  • Not one of Faustino's best bottlings yet very nice in this challenging vintage. Cork was bled through in a tiny way.

    Ultra tawny robe.
Nose is compromised by oxidative tones, yet displaying some minty ethereal qualities still.
In the mouth, the oxidation hasn't come here yet. It's lively, with beautiful acidity, red berries and some ompf. Tannins are totally molten. Long, complex, balanced and an excellent 👌👍 companion with tonight's Brie and Amazon Prime.

A lovely wine from the days of yore when Faustino I was a beacon of quality and ambition.

The 1992 vintage in Rioja, totally overshadowed by the exceptional 1991, was marked by a challenging growing season. It had a wet, cool spring followed by a mild summer, leading to delayed ripening and uneven grape development. This required meticulous vineyard management and selection at harvest. Consequently, the yields were lower, but the producers who excelled in their vineyard practices managed to produce wines with decent quality, albeit in limited quantities.

The reds from this vintage were characterized by their early approachability, offering softer tannins and a more fruit-forward profile. This vintage is often regarded as a testament to the winemakers' skill in navigating a difficult year, resulting in wines that are best enjoyed in their youth rather than for long-term cellaring.

This is a welcome exception, showcasing the high levels of skills and ambition that used to guide the making of this great wine...

  • Today we got an old bottle of Rioja from my father in law.

Bright, light, brick coloured with amber rim. Leather, muchrooms, mature blood oranges, Christmas spices like cinnamon and allspice. Soft with velvety tannins, tasty, great acidity, balanced and complex. Classical Rioja. Long finnish. Just a great mature wine. One of my best Riojas in many years.

  • Not good. We have had some great, old Faustinos, but this was not one. Let's just go with an off bottle which we have found in Spanish particularly Rioja.

  • Served blind, medium red with tinge of orange, vanilla nose from American oak, loam, guessed aged Rioja, tasted like a Rioja from 80s, mellow palate, liked this

  • A lovely clear appearance that was burgundian in look. A very mature nose that had me thinking this was from the 80s. Lots of vanilla to suggest American oak and Rioja (which was guessed by some of the attendees very quickly). Lots of forest floor, and a slight dampness (which I wasn't sure if possible fault). Medium to full body. Its appearance not as developed as its nose. Always a good QPR.
