  • WSET Level 2 - Day 3 (Pialligo Estate, Canberra, ACT, Australia): The appearance is clear and medium ruby in colour. Tears are visible.

The nose is clean with a medium intensity. There are well-defined aromas of red fruit (red plum), oak (vanilla), and bottle-age (leather). The wine is developing.

On the palate, the wine is dry with medium acidity, medium alcohol, and medium body. The medium(-) level tannins are stalky and provide a sticky tape like impression. The flavours have a medium intensity and show notes of red fruit (red plum), oak (vanilla), and bottle-age (leather). With aeration, a herbal note (mint) shows. The finish has a medium length.

This is a very good quality wine. The flavours are concentrated and have a great balance with the acidity and the alcohol. The stalky tannins are slightly astringent and have a reasonable balance with the acidity and flavour profile. The oak treatment is well-integrated supporting the aromas and flavours. In its current state, the wine is showing primary, secondary, and tertiary characteristics. The wine has a finish with good length.

The wine drinks well now, but has potential for further ageing. The fruit intensity is great, and the tannin and acid structure will support the wine as tertiary notes continue to develop.

  • The District Food and Wine Frolic (Haig Park, Braddon, Canberra): Clear. Medium ruby with tears.

Clean, developing nose with medium intensity aromas showing well-defined notes of raspberry, chocolate, and strawberry. There is a subtle aroma of leather. Chocolate indicates the use of oak.

The wine is dry with medium acidity, medium body, and medium alcohol. The tannins are of medium level, are mouth-filling and soft in nature, but to not hold. The flavours have a medium intensity and follow the nose with notes of raspberry, strawberry, chocolate, and leather. The strawberry note is jammy. The finish has a medium length. Chocolate flavours provides evidence that oak was used.

This is a good quality wine. The fruit is well-balanced with the acidity and the alcohol. The oak is well-integrated and the big and soft tannins fade away allowing the fruit to shine. The wine has an enjoyable finish with a great concentration of flavour (the alcohol does not dominate), and good length.

The wine drinks well now, but has potential for further ageing.
