  • Wow, I haven't had a wine like this for a while. I pulled this out at a tasting party this weekend, and it was well appreciated.
In appearance, this was a clear, but really deep, intense ruby. I had a two oz. pour and yet the wine was completely opaque to the point of looking like ink.
The nose was clean and very intense. One picks up notes of lush, deep, dark fruits like black berry, black currant, and raspberry with notes of tobacco and mint.
On the palate, the wine was very intense. This was a very dry wine with medium to high acidity that really makes your mouth water. The tannins were very big and intense, but also well integrated and not over powering. Considering this wine is 10 years old, it's amazing how powerful the tannins still are! The body on this wine was very full and mouth-filling. The flavors included intense dark fruits like blueberry, blackberry, and black currant. The finish is long with notes of mint, smoke, earth, and bramble.
Overall, this is a big, bold, very powerful wine. If you like big wines, like I do, then you would love this! Excellent value on this too! Beautiful product. This could age for another 10 years easy. I'm sorry I don't have another bottle, but it was well worth the wait.

  • Excellent.. Nothing spectacular but a really nice wine that left a good impression.. Should be interesting with more age.

  • '01 was a very good year for Chilean wines, but they are drinking now. Still, this is a high profile Malbec/Cab blend that hasn't even appeared since '07 because it is only produced when the concentration of the fruit makes it possible to do so, hence you could sit on this for a bit. Dense ruby, carmine and velvet. It is noted as being a bit clumsy in its excess oak. There is dense plummy fruit, drier than the Villa but otherwise close in character. Palate likewise seems drier, intensely flavored and velvety, but also very oaky and somewhat coarse. One hopes for some Old World restraint from Chile, but not here. Nonetheless an interesting and heroic wine, which will cellar for years. Best to let this one get some maturity on it.
