  • Out of sheer laziness I would like to point to PSPATRICK's note below, but adding acacia honey and the typically Talisker almond oil / marzipan and sandalwood. The same age as the 10, it's chili bite has been considerably reduced and tamed by a strong-for-the-age cask maturation, a necessary condition for me to enjoy Talisker. Similar in that regard to the Talisker Port Ruighe, but significantly more mature and without the metallic notes of youth. Similar in application to the Lagavulin 16, but that one clearly convinced me more in direct comparison (new TN for it coming up within the next 2 months) because it has more complexity and iodine than this rather sweet affair here.

I am content to have one more bottle of this, but if looking for a rebuy I would probably go for a Lagavulin 16 or else and more probably to a Laphroaig.

  • This is the 2016 release so I suppose vintage 2005 as it spends 10 years ageing like normally Talisker and then one year in sherry-conditioned casks
    Rancio nose, rum, sugar sweetness
Then smoke comes through on the palate but with a thick sweet texture.
Unusual though I couldn't keep going back to the ten year old for sheer pleasure

  • The whisky had a nice, medium orange-golden colour and offered pronounced black pepper aromas, moderate peat smoke, a salty sea breeze/seaweed component, well-integrated sherry notes and good underlying fruit aromas on the nose. On the palate, the whisky showed intense black pepper, smoke, salty seaweed, sherry and underlying orange and yellow stone fruit flavous, with warming alcohol and very good length. The medium-bodied whisky had good complexity and was reasonably well-integrated in the context of its age and style. It was a little rustic, but reasonably balanced; quintessentially young Talisker. Interestingly, the whisky became smoother and more balanced after the bottle had been open for a couple of weeks – an experience I also made with various other Talisker bottlings. Body 5.5/10, Smoke 4/10, Sweetness 2/10.

Finish: Een getemde gigant.
