This shows what a great vintage 1998 is in Barossa. Opulent, youthful and rich with all the great Greenock Creek hallmark (blood, iron, geranium) but less intense as in other vintages, which makes it more balanced. Stunning!!

One of the best older Aussi wines that I've had for a while. This is drinking well now and still have more time to go. I don't think it will get any better. The flavor was lots of tobacco and leather and velvety fruit and integrated tannin. Great complexity. Lasted well over two nights.

Decanted for half an hour, with appetizers at Porcini. Great earthy tobacco and raw meat (bacon) on the nose and palate, some fruit arrived after 30 min. Fantastic!

Opened at a dinner with friends in North New Jersey, allowed to breathe for 30 min. The wine has a faint berry nose along with a musty Rhone funk to it, really smooth and fun to experience. Tannins pretty much absent. Medium bodied.

Decanted and enjoyed on a leisurely Sat night. 30 min after opening, there is an overpowering tobacco shop nose, like opening oak drawers full of musty cigars. Red fruit notes in the nose as well, cherry, spice. Unfolding over 2h, the taste is musty mashed cherry pulp, cedar notes, not as intense as the nose; a little acid; only the faintest of tannin fingerprints in the finish. This is smooth and fully developed, a delightful experience!
I haven't had many older (15y+) Aussie vintages, this certainly bears no resemblance to a young fruit forward Shiraz. The earthy nose and musty flavor profile seem more Old World (Rhone?) than New World. This didn't benefit from lengthy decanting, it tasted just as good after 30 min as after 2h, which makes this a good option bringing to a restaurant.
On day two this has acquired some additional funky notes, celery, soap (?), overripe fruit. Not sure I like it as much on the second day as compared with the first.
