  • Un Valpo sans lourdeur. Acidulé et aérien à la limite de l'insipide.
Peut-être un peu cher pour un vin somme toute correct...

  • Tart red fruit, heaps of pepper, and high acid – this is Valpolicella alright. I have to give due credit to Pra and their push towards higher quality wine from a region known for cheaply priced bulk; their Soave Classico offering was superb and this bottle shows that Valpolicella can rise above the ranks of mere table wine (though this is admittedly from the slightly higher regarded ‘Classico’ region as well). In keeping with that theme, this certainly was classic; cranberry, red currant, and sour cherry led the way for sage, pepper, and forest notes. Fennel, anise, and steak spice presented themselves with a few more sips, and when the wine was paired with pasta, richer fruit – raspberry, cherry, plum – burst forward. Several contrasting notes danced around the finish, including vanilla, cigar, and orange zest. Though not complex, the palate maintained a decent level of intrigue which improved with the food pairing – this is, after all, a wine that’s built for hearty Italian meals. I’m not sure how keen I’d be to have this in a regular rotation, but it’s one I’d look for again on pasta night!

  • Decent, but not quite the energy of the last two vintages.
