  • {scerwcap, 14%} Nicely aged appearance, and more of herby/leaf/currant - right in the slot for Coonawarra cabernet. The palate doesn't quite live up to flagship billing, with minimal tannin remaining, good medium weight, some development of flavours but a generally dilute sort of presence and finish that's only about short/medium in length. Was expecting better than this, although it's not a bad wine, and should hold another half dozen years easily. But then, what for?

  • The 2009 Parker Coonawarra Estate First Growth captivates with its deep garnet color. The nose offers an enticing mix of ripe blackcurrant, subtle vanilla, and a hint of menthol, reflecting the distinctive terroir of Coonawarra. The palate is smooth and silky, showcasing a well-balanced blend of dark fruits, accompanied by secondary notes of supple leather and aged tobacco, which lend complexity and depth.

Although the finish is somewhat short, the wine maintains its poise and overall harmony, providing a pleasant tasting experience. My opinion based on sample of one is that it could be an ideal time to enjoy this wine, but it may also continue to evolve and offer new nuances in the next few years.

  • Drinking warm, well rounded but with dry finish. Dominant for me was both an initial distinctive voluptuous breadth and then a burnt coffee over blueberry type drying end. Was like hinting at caramel with warming spices but instead of this spreading sweetly over the palate there was this tight dry finish. Distinctive but enjoyable. (Changed very little over a two hour plus period)

  • Appearance: medium ruby
Nose: Medium plus intensity; aromas of eucalyptus, vanilla, toast, dark plum, ripe dark cherry, menthol, cedar, nutmeg, cloves, licorice. It’s developing.
Palate: dry, high acidity, high tannins, high alcohol, full body, medium plus flavour intensity, blackcurrant, cassis and dark chocolate come through. The finish is medium plus.
Overall, it’s a very good wine. Can drink now, has potential for further ageing.
Still quite tight to drink now, especially the tannins are not fully integrated yet (fine grained though) after 2 hours decanting. Will assess when it opens up later or day 2.
On day 2, the wine has opened up and presents nice mushroom, subtle truffle and savoury/meaty characters. Very delightful, yet a little bit homogeneous for a truly great wine.

  • Lovely example of a Coonawarra cabernet. All that minty, eucalypt goodness. The only criticism would be that the fruit is a little forward, but given the acidity and tannins are nicely balanced, I think this not a major issue. I am going to enjoy the other bottles over the next decade at least.
