A private dinner (Restaurant espai KRU, Barcelona, Spain): Half bottle, level very top shoulder. Pale colour, completely bricked through; smoky nose, spicy and tertiary but completely fresh, quintessential old Rioja; the palate is fresh and dry but it retains a touch of natural sweetness, still together but the acidity is just starting to separate on the back palate; alpine herbs on the finish, light and gentle and with good length. A thoroughly unfashionable style, but incredible quality for a 48 year old half bottle.
