  • A private lunch (Restaurant Zarzo *, Eindhoven, NL): Level into neck. Bottled 1977, base wine 1971, but with some 1969 and 1968 in the blend according to Ruben Kwakman, the sommelier. I record the wine here as a 1971. Light and lively colour for age, full yellow, hint of gold; wonderfully complex nose, honey and candied fruit, spices and wax, flowers, vestiges of citrus fruit, harmonious and deep; the palate is bone dry but not austere (just), with firm viura acidity providing line and length, light flavours, tart citrus, subtle bitters, ever so slightly tired but still completely together; light and mineral finish, lemon curd, good length. Fascinating and unique wine, incredible vitality after almost half a century.
