MGA Cannubi very often produces fantastic nebbiolo fruit, so also this time from winemaker Damilano. Although, the 2013 vintage is a vintage that creates mixed opinions, when this it was released on the market, it received good reviews. Many consider this a classic vintage, my opinion is that 2013 remains a complicated vintage. A bit like a lottery; great wines and wines that are still in the tunnel and sort of waiting to deliver. Damilano Cannubi 2013 has a great structure, tannins that are exactly what I want, fine-grained with good grip, the acidity is spot on. The fruit is elegant and sublime, cranberries, roses and drying herbs, asphalt and anise. For my own part, I would like to raise the fruit to the same level as the structure, hopefully this will happen with another 3 - 5 years in the cellar.

Tasted at Locanda in the Cannubi vineyard, this wine had a medium red center with orange rims. The nose generated black cherries, licorice, mineral, and some fennel notes.
This wine was ripe but gorgeously balanced in the mouth with light tannin, solid acidity, and sneaky length.
It will likely improve slightly over the next 20 years or so.

We enjoyed a 1/2 bottle format which is advantageous at this age. Brick red. Nice complexity and depth as it evolved significantly over the hour and a half we enjoyed it. It opens up nicely beginning 10-20 minutes in. Rich, floral, deep mustiness comingled and juxtaposed with a meaty tang. An almost mushroom essence is integrated into the flavor. Doesn’t punch you in the face but builds.

A disappointment. No complexity. Too much raisin for my taste.

Lots of promise and structure but hard as nails.
Give this more time.
