  • A family Riesling tasting (@Private location): Glass: Spiegelau White wine
I had the rare opportunity to taste this wine from the same source for a second time within a few weeks and compare it to a different “feinherb” Auslese from Molitor from the 2006 vintage. Based on my previous notes I decanted the bottle about 2h before drinking.
In general I don’t have much to add to my previous notes and that of M_Arcon. This wine is surprisingly elegant and chiseled. No blockbuster and not as expressive as the 2006 Schlossberg. So I was not surprised, that my family favored the Schlossberg. The 2h decant helped to open up the wine a bit, but I guess it needs 5+ more years to fully blossom. 92-93

  • Private Tasting (Private Location): Out of a reserve the Weingut put out on the market some months ago. Slow, spontaneous fermentation. Long storage on the yeast for over 18 months in wooden barrels without any Battonage. After the filling the bottles were left in the cellar for several years.
I brought the wine to the tasting so I know that it has a certain age but all the boys guessed that it must be a much younger wine from a warm vintage. This Auslese has a certain amount of ripeness in form of ripe yellow stone fruit on the nose. The fruit is mixed with a bit of honey and citrus zest in the beginning. But the wine needs time and air. Lots of air. It gets fresher and fresher from minute to minute. You get mint, herbs and some ginger.
Round (long time on the yeast) with ripe apple notes, juicy and a bit plump on the palate but also here you need to be patient. The acidity comes through the back door, bringing some herbal minerality and rock flour with it. Also the finish develops its length from minute to minute.
A paragon that you need to be patient and give the wine the time it needs. Surely potential left for another decade or more.

  • Private Tasting (@Private location): Tasted blind. Clear, pale golden color. Clean, medium intense and quite youthful nose with herbs, ripe yellow stone fruit, mint and some honey. Chiseled and elegant. Needs time to open up.
Off-dry. We first guessed a declassified Spätlese (late harvest) or a light Auslese. We were close  It is really in between: feinherb…
Alcohol seems quite low despite its 12,5% abv. Complex flavors of ripe apple, apricot, yellow stone fruit, some mineral notes (rock flour), no signs of ageing. Very juicy. Lacks a bit of tension and pressure. After some time in the open bottle the wine reveals its complexity and beauty. It is not loud, but complex and makes real fun to drink. This bottle is a 2017 release straight of the vintners cellar. That explains its youthfulness. Has 10-20+ years of further development ahead. A really good wine now and potentially a great one in the distant future. 92-93
