  Clear pale garnet
  
  Vanilla
  Butterscotch
  Red fruit, cherry pie? cooked plums? Raisins, figs.
  Spice: nutmeg?
  
  Dry
  Red fruit character, stewed, almost dried
  Med+ tannins: fine grained
  Med+ acid
  Med body
  Med alcohol
  Short finish
  
  Interestingly developed - seems like a lot of winemaking at this point. Probably some new French oak, definitely MLF.

  Good+, certainly ready, for my palate, anyway. The more savory side of the grape in this vintage. Medium-bodied, with good acidity, good+ finish, and good+ complexity. Can hold here for a few more years, but I don't see sacrificing freshness for add'l savory compounds. I found it to be at its best after 90 minutes open, fwiw. Very good food wine; imo, representative of many Etna Rosso in this vintage in terms of profile. recommended

  A surprisingly big, serious, brooding wine. The aroma profile is not at all what I expected based on past Etna rossos: dried figs and prunes, aged balsamic, black cherries (not at all at the forefront to my nose), iodine, and smoked salt. Very savory, with an underlying balsamic acidity. Way more mature aromas than I would have expected from a wine that is not yet five years old. I had read that nerello mascalese is thought to be a child of sangiovese, but I had never tasted a similarity until today.
  
  This wine has weighty presence on the palate. It reminds me of a big, burly brunello. Tannins are chewy, but I like where they are at for drinking today. It's so strange how mature this wine tastes.... Just my bottle?
  
  Going back through my tasting notes, it seems that nerello mascalese can be have a multitude of personalities, ranging from serious, savory wines like this one to fun, fruity wines.
  
  Italy is full of surprises -- so many wines made in little-known regions from little-known varietals that taste world-class.

  Lunch at La Casa Nostra, Bangkok with the wine theme regional Italians, double decanted for 2 hours, light red, smokey, gamey nose, lots of minerals, intense with good backbone, interesting, I liked this wine
