Popped and poured, this had a deep, strongly perfumed nose reminiscent of good Bordeaux. Not decanting this was a mistake; the wine was completely constricted by tenacious tannins that never loosened their grip after an hour in the glass. I know from prior experience that there was a brilliant, nuanced palate hiding in there somewhere, but I didn't allow it enough breathing room. Not rating this one, though that shouldn't be a reflection on the quality of the wine so much as my own lack of foresight.

(GRAN RISERVA Balbas Ribera del Duero) Spain Dear Friends, This wine is drinking beautifully and for those of you looking for winery-aged examples of the highest order, do not hesitate to enjoy this fascinating expression of detail. I opened a bottle of this after a long cellar-slumber (it was previously closed and not giving much) and now the magic of our hobby has sprinkled its fairy dust on this Gran Riserva. This wine has years of life ahead and it represents a chance to make your cellar more well-rounded instead of the usual suspects of Bordeaux and Burgundy. If you thought Vega Sicilia was the only classic ageworthy wine from Ribera, this may open your eyes to a very worthy new friend: This parcel is directly from the winery cellar with perfect provenance: 1996 Bodegas Balbas Ribera del Duero "Gran Riserva" Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Spain9930

May have left this one too long, but disappointed by the last of these bottles, overly extracted

Fantastic nose of cedar and spice but somewhat missing the fruit in the mouth. Did improve after further aeration.
