  • An interesting wine. Inexpensive whites usually take a lot of shortcuts (oak bombs, acid and sugar, et), but not this one. It has a sauv-blanc / chenin quality to it that I like.

It is schizophrenic, though, at open (cellar temp) it was a flabby mess. No perceptible acid, smooth mouth feel with the light fruit but the lack of acidity was distracting.

On a hunch I chilled it in the fridge for several hours and what a difference. Usually fridge temps mask some off flavors (which this did not have), but for this wine, it brought out a lot. Oddly enough the acidity came back, which made no sense, but there it was. Now that it was more balanced the oak notes, pear, crisp citrus all come through.

    Definitely punching above its weight.

  • A couple of things before we even get to the notes. First, this is still (to me) an old school Spanish white. That means oak. That means air. If you pop and pour you’re going to get clobbered by a 2x4. Give it at least a half hour open on ice. Second, this is a wine that begs for food accompaniment. It stands up to olives and strong tastes, but is a little mute by itself.
The varietal is intriguing in that it combines the smoky edge of say a white Rhône with the herbaceouness of a Sauvignon blanc. It had lovely cut grass and lemon along with really pronounced oak. It married very well with seafood with Andalusian treatments. Serve this with highly accented seafood or tapas to appreciate what it is all about. Quite good QPR.
