  • Would not have recognized this wine as a Beaujolais, had it been served blind. The deep color is particularly beautiful, especially at the edges where the gradations are more of puce than burgundy, and no trace of brick. On the nose, age has added layers of complexity, while on the tongue, it presents an interesting textural quality, flavors of red fruit joined by an apple caramel toffee note that became more assertive as the bottle opened up (I drank it over a day, properly stoppered and vacuum pumped in between). Still balanced by sufficient acidity to prevent the wine from becoming cloying or viscous, it is, I would venture, coming to the end of its drinking window. Very enjoyable.
PS. Aged Beaujolais seems an oxymoron, though I am sure others will jump into a discourse with opposing views, for which this bottle would serve a prime example.
Rated 1 on a scale of -1 to 3. I may revise this score upwards, as I think about it.

  • 13% alcohol. great deep purple garnet color. very sour nose at first (not enjoyable), which mostly blew off over a 5 day period. dark strawberry and berries, plum, earthy minerals, vitamins, and hints of tar, molasses, and cocoa that developed with time opened.
