My beloved Terre Nere from ‘Grand Cru’ single vineyard of San Lorenzo and its very first vintage. Made from single varietal of Nerello Mascalese, from more than 70 year old vines, located at 700-850 meters of altitude. Was fortunate to enjoy it from magnum over dinner with friends. Aged in used FR oak for 18 months. Medium+ intensity aroma of ripe strawberries, cherries, smoke, tar, spice, dry herbs, lavender. Palate is vibrant and beautifully structured, flinty and smoky red fruits, high acidity, silky tannins.

2015 Terre Nere (Chicago, IL): This wine, too, has a brilliant nose, with intense fruit and floral aromatics, as well as a touch of sulphur. The palate is very similar to the Santo Spirito, with a more brooding and tannic character, but I think I have to give the slight edge to the Santo Spirito, which I found was the more open and generous wine. This wine, too, is one of a massive scaffold of tannin.
