A Chateauneuf competitor? Next to Chateauneuf du Pape, the various wine regions are getting their own AOC and developing their own identities. The best known name in Cairanne is Marcel Richaud. His straight "Cairanne" is a beautifully balanced blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Counoise and Carignan. Classy and harmonious, it eschews the traditional power of the Chateauneufs while delivering more complexity and depth than other Côtes du Rhône Villages. A sweet spot!

15% alcohol, ouch! G 50%, Mrvdr 25%, S 10%, the rest equally shared between Carignan, Cinsault and Counoise. Short cork of vg quality. Deep colour with marginal lightening at the rim into a youthful bright red. The nose is all dark fruit and black olives, with just a bit of ink added for good measure. Remarkably lively in the mouth thanks to good acidity; nothing cooked about the fruit. Good grip too. This wine achieves an unlikely balance given its hefty alcool level. Hats off to the Richaud team (they are all listed individually on the back label). A guilty pleasure not to be repeated too often, but a success certainly.

15% alcohol, yikes! Very short cork, not terribly dense either, but showing no wine penetration. Ink dark colour with no fading at the edge. The nose is opulent with ripe blackberry and other dark berries. Some inky aspect too, in a very pleasant way, with violet at the back end. The mouth is more nimble than what the alcohol level would suggest, thanks to outstanding balancing acidity; lovely dark fruited flavours and a measure of liquorice. Pretty good grip in spite of the richness. There is a sweet aspect to this wine which is more related to Grenache than to any residual sugar. Quite a beast of a wine, and dangerously close to decadent, but very successful on its own terms. Pairing with beef was very successful. A repeat purchase.

Pretty boring on night one without a decant, came open big time on night two with lamb. A real surprise and a ton more complexity than the first evening’s “well this is enjoyable and easy.”
I wish the label didn’t look like it came off my home printer.

Blind, this wine smelled of stewed veggies, lentils, pea soup, spices, black tea ending on an unpleasant salty, yeasty bitter finish. I will avoid scoring as I’m not sure if this is the style or simply a faulty bottle. For the moment avoid it considering it’s $41 CAD price tag.
