Tonight decided to pop a “keeper” bottle I’d picked up at a tasting last year...Cenerentola, or Cinderella, named so because the winery that produces this is between the “stepsisters” of Montalcino and Montepulciano. Made up of the well known Sangiovese grape (65%) and the almost unknown and long-ago-abandoned Foglia Tonda grape (35%), and of an appellation that has only existed since 2000 (Orcia...born on Valentine’s Day of all days!), it started out quite tight and dense. Rusty brick red color, aroma of spice and...Dr. Pepper? Decanting through my Vinturi helped it to open up to a luscious, rich beauty. An incredible, lush potion of licorice and clove and dark fruit and other spices I don’t even know yet. Second half of the bottle tasted even better the next night. Not easy to find, but if by chance you spot this on a shelf in your local wine merchant, plunk down for it...I give my word, you will not be disappointed.
