  • From Club La Santa - El Lago - €30 off the list. No formal note but this is certainly towards the modern end of Rioja with ripe dark fruit, mocha, vanilla, spice, rich and round in the mouth but soft too with good contrasting acidity carrying a goodish length finish. Excellent and good value.

  • No idea where this came from, so that made it likely it was one of those hamper wines put together with a lot of other stuff that the kids get at work and bring home at Christmas.
Wifey in the mood for a red, so with me doing Dry January it was as good as any to open. On opening and decanting got a faint whiff of 'corked' so after 45 yrs of marriage im not about to poison her so had a glass.....and yes there was a very faint taste of cork but I reckoned it would blow off after an hour with air.....and it did.
Next night I relented and helped her finish the bottle. Had with chili con carne and it was a delight. Had opened up nicely with hints of red berries, vanilla, liquorice and roasted coffee.
Its a food wine for me rather than a sipper. Its very much an everyday wine so is competing with so many others and therefore will be all about the price point[QPR]in your area. However, well worth testing it against your own everyday rioja and then decide on the basis of comparative prices.
